San Bernardino History & Railroad Museum

To understand San Bernardino, spend some time with its railroad history. The city grew as an important transportation center, and the San Bernardino History & Railroad Museum gives that story a physical home inside the historic Santa Fe Depot.

The depot itself is part of the attraction. It recalls an era when rail travel shaped cities across Southern California and San Bernardino was a major point on the network.

What to expect

This is a local museum rather than a giant national institution. That is precisely why I like places like this. Exhibits, photographs and railroad objects connect the broad history of western railroads with the people and places of San Bernardino.

If you love trains, allow more time than you initially planned. If railroad history is not normally your subject, the building and local context still make the visit worthwhile.

Check before you go

Smaller museums often have limited opening hours, so check the current schedule before driving over. Combine it with other historic stops: the railroad, Route 66 and San Bernardino’s role as a transportation crossroads are all parts of the same story.
