When you want open space without committing to a full mountain expedition, Glen Helen Regional Park is one of the easiest choices near San Bernardino. The park sits north of the city with the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains forming a dramatic backdrop.
This is more local recreation park than wilderness destination. Families come for picnics, fishing and outdoor time, and the large grounds work well when you simply want to get away from streets and traffic for a few hours.
When I would go
I would choose Glen Helen for a relaxed morning or afternoon. Bring water and sun protection, particularly during warmer months. Inland Southern California heat can make midday uncomfortable, while cooler months are often much more pleasant.
Check current conditions
Facilities, swimming availability, events and fees can change, so check San Bernardino County Parks before setting out. Large nearby events can also affect traffic.
For serious mountain scenery continue into the national forest. For an uncomplicated outdoor break close to San Bernardino, Glen Helen is much easier.
