Big Bear Lake is farther into the San Bernardino Mountains than Lake Arrowhead, but it offers enough to justify the extra driving. Think of it as a full-day excursion rather than something to squeeze between other attractions.
Why go?
Big Bear has a real mountain-resort identity. Depending on the season, visitors come for skiing and snow play, hiking, lake activities, mountain biking or simply cooler weather and alpine scenery.
The village gives you restaurants and shops, but I would make sure at least part of the day is spent outdoors. Driving all that way only to browse stores misses the point.
The road deserves respect
Mountain roads are winding and slower than the mileage suggests. In winter, snow and ice can transform an easy-looking trip into a serious drive. Check weather, chain requirements and road conditions before leaving.
Lake Arrowhead or Big Bear?
Choose Lake Arrowhead for an easier, shorter taste of the mountains. Choose Big Bear when the mountain destination itself is the main event. On a clear day with plenty of time, Big Bear shows just how different the landscape can become within the same county.
